A disturbing discovery in an Upstate New York reservoir, which supplies drinking water to parts of Rochester, has led city officials to issue a precautionary boil water advisory for residents.
Discovery and Response:
City Water Bureau workers stumbled upon the body in the Highland Park Reservoir around 8 a.m. during routine checks. Immediately, officials disconnected the reservoir from the public water supply and initiated plans to drain and sanitize it.
Police divers retrieved the body of an adult male from the water, and investigations into the circumstances of his death are ongoing.
Preventive Measures:
Although water testing revealed no immediate safety concerns, authorities issued a boil water advisory for several neighborhoods as a precautionary measure.
The advisory will remain in place until the reservoir is thoroughly cleaned and returned to service.
Mayor Malik Evans emphasized the importance of caution due to the incident’s proximity to the city’s water supply.
Impact on Schools and Residents:
In response to the advisory, the Rochester City School District announced the closure of all schools on Wednesday.
Residents were advised to boil tap water for at least one minute before use or use bottled water as a safe alternative for drinking, cooking, and other purposes.
Addressing Community Concerns:
Expressing sadness over the situation, Mayor Malik Evans assured residents of the city’s commitment to public safety.
The swift response and issuance of preventive measures aim to alleviate concerns and prioritize the community’s well-being.
