With approximately 90,000 packages reported stolen or lost in transit daily in New York City, city officials have implemented a proactive measure to combat package theft.

The LockerNYC initiative introduces free public delivery lockers across the city, aiming to safeguard packages and streamline delivery operations.

LockerNYC Pilot Program:

The LockerNYC initiative launches as a one-year pilot program, offering lockers capable of holding 25 packages each.

These lockers, strategically placed across the city, are accessible to multiple delivery carriers, enhancing convenience and efficiency in package management.

Current and Planned Locations:

Currently, seven lockers are operational in various neighborhoods, including Bedford-Stuyvesant, Canarsie, East Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and Sunnyside. Additional Bushwick and Hell’s Kitchen locations are in the pipeline, expanding the initiative’s reach.

The locker setups, standing six and a half feet tall, are easily recognizable with their green design. Authorized delivery companies like UPS and DHL have round-the-clock access to drop off and retrieve packages, bolstering security and reducing the theft risk.

Mayor’s Perspective:

Mayor Eric Adams emphasizes the significance of addressing package theft, citing the alarming statistics of stolen and lost packages daily.

The LockerNYC initiative represents a proactive approach to tackling this issue, aiming to protect New Yorkers’ belongings and enhance community safety.

Traffic and Environmental Impact:

Beyond addressing package theft, city officials anticipate the initiative to alleviate delivery truck congestion on streets.

By minimizing the number of trips required for deliveries, the initiative aims to reduce double-parked vehicles and improve air quality by curbing emissions.

Operational Success:

A similar pilot program in Seattle yielded promising results, showcasing reduced truck idling and enhanced delivery efficiency.

The LockerNYC initiative, operated and maintained by GoLocker, aims to replicate this success while covering the cost of the pilot program’s first year.
