Thailand has canceled the visa of a Swiss guy who faced rising backlash after news that he allegedly kicked a local lady sitting on the steps near his villa in Phuket.

Initial Incident and Apology

Urs Fehr and his wife Khanuengnit, residents of Phuket, Thailand, initially confronted Thandao Chandam, believing she was intruding on their property. However, they later apologized for the altercation.

Community Outcry

Following the incident, hundreds of angry locals gathered in front of Fehr’s seaside villa, demanding his expulsion from the area.

The incident has shed light on the growing tension surrounding the presence of foreigners in Phuket, where over 100,000 expatriates are estimated to reside.

Popular Tourist Destination

Phuket is renowned as one of Thailand’s premier tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors annually.

Details of the Altercation

According to reports, Mr. Fehr allegedly kicked Thandao Chandam while she and her friend were sitting outside their villa.

Ms. Khanuengnit also reportedly berated Ms. Thandao, who works as a doctor in Phuket. Fehr claimed he believed the individuals were trespassing on his property.

Backlash and Demands

The altercation sparked outrage among locals, who called for Fehr’s visa revocation and the restoration of public access to the beach near his property. Protesters highlighted concerns over the occupation of public spaces by foreigners.

Investigation and Legal Action

An investigation revealed that the villa’s steps were constructed illegally on public land, leading authorities to order their removal. Ms. Thandao filed a complaint with the police, resulting in assault charges against Mr. Fehr.

Government Response

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin instructed law enforcement and tourism officials to enforce regulations ensuring foreigners comply with Thailand’s laws.

Immigration authorities announced plans to detain Fehr pending legal proceedings but stated he could remain in Thailand to defend himself against the assault charges.
