Lobbying companies work double duty, meaning the political claims of climate change victims and perpetrators in the state capital.

Climate Crisis Complicity:

New research exposes a concerning trend in New York, where numerous universities, hospitals, museums, and non-profits are found to be employing lobbyists who also represent fossil fuel companies. This practice has raised accusations of complicity in exacerbating the climate crisis.

Wealthy Lobbying Firms:

The investigation found that some of New York’s most affluent lobbying firms are simultaneously advocating for both the interests of climate crisis victims and fossil fuel corporations.

This dual representation underscores a complex web of connections between various sectors in the state.

Data Analysis:

The report analyzed the client portfolios of six prominent lobbying firms in New York, shedding light on the intertwined relationships between cultural, business, and educational institutions and the fossil fuel industry.

This analysis highlights the extent of the connections and their potential implications.

NYU’s Contradiction:

Notably, New York University (NYU), which publicly committed to divesting its substantial endowment from coal, oil, and gas companies, is among the institutions linked to fossil fuel lobbyists.

Despite its stance on divestment, NYU shares lobbyists with six fossil fuel firms, including Valero and National Grid.

Calls for Accountability:

The findings have sparked calls for accountability and transparency from these institutions. Critics argue that employing lobbyists with ties to the fossil fuel industry contradicts the stated commitments of these organizations to combat the climate crisis.
