Winter is returning to the New York City area after a long time without heavy snowfall.

Following a prolonged absence of significant snowfall, winter is returning in New York City, promising a flurry of activity and a change in weather patterns.

Forecast Details: Snowfall and Wind Gusts on the Horizon:

Friday’s weather presents a mix of sunshine and gusty winds, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 mph and “feels like” temperatures dipping into the 20s.

While the day remains mostly clear, the anticipation builds for the possibility of snow late into Friday night and Saturday.

Snow Accumulation and Advisory Updates:

Initial forecasts predicted heavier snowfall south of New York City, but recent updates suggest an increased likelihood of accumulation within the five boroughs. South of I-78 in New Jersey, up to 5 inches of snow are expected, prompting a winter weather advisory.

The snowfall is expected to commence around midnight, persisting steadily until around 7 a.m. However, intermittent snow showers may linger throughout the day, potentially resulting in a total accumulation of about 2 inches in the city.

While this may not warrant plowing by sanitation officials, alternate side parking will be suspended on Saturday.

Expansion of Winter Weather Advisory:

In preparation for the impending snowfall, the winter weather advisory has been extended to encompass Long Island and the five boroughs, highlighting the need for caution and preparedness across the region.

Looking Ahead: Weekend Forecast and Beyond:

Following the snowfall, colder temperatures are forecasted for Saturday night, accompanied by clear skies. The remainder of the holiday weekend promises sunny and dry conditions, albeit with some breeziness on Sunday.

Looking further ahead, a gradual warm-up is anticipated for the following week, with temperatures climbing back up to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
