Zach Wilson’s time with the New York Jets is over. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he was reportedly traded to the Denver Broncos in a late-round pick exchange.
The Jets will absorb a portion of Wilson’s salary to facilitate the deal. Denver will acquire Wilson in exchange for sending New York the No. 207 overall pick in this week’s draft and receiving the No. 256 overall pick in return.
Zach Wilson’s Struggles with the Jets:
Wilson’s stint with the Jets was fraught with challenges from the outset. Despite being the No. 2 overall choice in the 2021 draft, he faced difficulties on the field.
Wilson started 13 games in his rookie season, tallying 2,334 passing yards, nine touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and five fumbles. His struggles continued into his sophomore year, where he started nine games before being replaced by Mike White and Joe Flacco.
Challenges in the 2022 Season:
During the 2022 season, Wilson was Aaron Rodgers’s backup. However, he was thrust into action after Rodgers sustained a season-ending Achilles injury.
Despite the opportunity, Wilson failed to showcase significant improvement. Over 12 games (11 starts), he managed 2,271 passing yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 11 fumbles.
Wilson was benched multiple times as the season progressed in favor of Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian.
Zach Wilson’s Future with the Broncos:
With his move to the Denver Broncos, Wilson joins Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci as quarterbacks on the roster. Notably, the Broncos parted ways with Russell Wilson, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March.
As the Broncos gear up for the upcoming draft, holding the No. 12 overall pick, Wilson’s acquisition adds depth to their quarterback options and raises questions about their plans for the future.
